ABOUT US

The Civil Aviation Authority was established in May 1996 in recognition of the need to upgrade and improve the safety, efficiency, quality and security of Air Transport Services in Jamaica, thereby supporting the country's economic and social development . The Authority, which replaced the Civil Aviation Department, was restructured to strengthen safety oversight and regulation of the Jamaican Air Transport Sector. The Authority is a statutory organization with the Ministry of Transport and Works which regulates the Jamaica Aviation Industry.

The Authority now regulates all Air Navigation activities and matters relating to safety in civil aviation in Jamaica. The aviation industry in Jamaica is comprised of the national airline, Air Jamaica; six(6) air taxi operators, two flight training units, one aerial applicator and two maintenance organizations.

There are over 700 licenced pilots, 50 licenced air controllers, 150 licenced maintenance engineers, as well as 400 cabin attendants, two airline handling agencies and two air courier companies active in Jamaica. The country has two international airports, Norman Manley in the capital, Kingston and Sangster in the city of Montego Bay. There are also four active domestic aerodromes, Tinson Pen, Boscobel, Port Antonio and Negril.

As a contracting member state of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Jamaica is required to provide the relevant services under the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation which relate to air safety and airport operations standards.
